2019 March Madness - Results!

posted Mar 11, 2019, 9:51 AM by Michael McCreary   [ updated Mar 11, 2019, 9:53 AM ]

We caught a break in the rain and were able to complete the tournament before things got too cold and wet. A huge thanks to C.L. Smith Elementary, their coaching team, and their principal, Mr. Black for hosting the event!

We look forward to seeing everybody at Paso Robles High School on May 19th! Keep an eye out for announcements and registration.

2018 Spring Fling Results

posted May 21, 2018, 12:34 PM by Michael McCreary

So, yah, we had about 30 more students than I expected - a great problem to have! Looks like I'll need to get even more medals for next time - thank you to the handful of students in the Rated section for your understanding about running out. :(

Thanks again to Pacheco Elementary and all our volunteers for helping the event to be a great success! Hope to see everybody again in the Fall!

Three Sections:
  • Non-Rated Section pK-3rd Grade: For new and beginning players pK-3rd grades. This section is Non-Rated which means that the results will not be submitted to USCF. Writing down moves is encouraged but not required. Using a clock is encouraged but not required.
  • Non-Rated pK-8th Grade: For new and beginning pre-K through 8th graders. Just like the pK-3rd section but for older players. Younger players may "play-up" in this section if they'd like more of a challenge.
  • Rated Section: For more experienced players pK-12 grades. USCF rated 600 or more must play this section. Unrated and USCF rated below 600 may also "play-up" to this section if they would like the extra challenge. Results from this section will be submitted to the USCF for official rating. Current USCF membership is required (see below for information). Unless excused by TD, players must write down moves and use a clock.
  • Sections may be combined or adjusted at TD discretion based on attendance.
Format:
  • USCF rules for Scholastic tournament.
  • 5 rounds SS (Swiss System) - Players are paired for each round against players with approximately the same number of wins and losses after each round (players might not play all 5 rounds if byes are requested or if there's an odd number of players for a round).
  • Game in 30 minute for each player, 5-second delay for Rated section.
  • Tournament Director (TD) discretion may be used for any pairings. We will try to avoid pairings against siblings and school mates for initial rounds.

posted Mar 11, 2018, 1:09 PM by Michael McCreary   [ updated Mar 11, 2018, 1:36 PM ]

Wow! Another record-breaking event in Paso Robles - 85 players! Thanks again to Joshua Gwiazda and the great PRHS team for keeping everybody warm and cozy in the midst of the rain. Also thank you to our volunteer tournament directors for keeping things running smoothly - that was a lot of kids!

Full results are below.

Please email me at michael@slochess.com with any corrections or other feedback. We plan to have our next tournament in late May or early June this year.

Breton Patrick Carr, 10/1/1955 - 2/11/2018

posted Feb 22, 2018, 9:55 AM by Michael McCreary

Breton at Morro Bay

Breton was a common fixture at our Saturday gatherings in Morro Bay and yearly tournaments. We appreciated his competitive play and gentle character. He lived up to the reputation for us chess players being "characters" by gently insisting on using his quality chess pieces and board as well as his sun protective clothing. He was instrumental in coordinating our last tournament venue in Templeton. He also put together the great write-up of the giant chess board in Morro Bay.

We are all very thankful for his impact on Central Coast Chess and our lives. He will be missed!

You can view his full obituary on the Tribune website.
