Morro Bay High School was a great venue! Thank you again to Mark Wilton and all the MBHS Chess Team for being great hosts.
It was a great tournament to end the year. I was especially impressed to see the quality of play improve over the year. A full day of chess is exhausting and I am so proud of all the kids for hanging in there and giving it their best even if the results weren't what they were hoping. You are all winners!
We did had decisive results in the Rated section. Joey Ruddell came in first with 4.5 points, new-comer Matthew Calandro came in second with 3.5 points and Judith Gottlieb in third with 3 points. Thanks to those that took a risk and played up a section!
The non-rated section saw winner John Raj in only his second tournament with 4.5 points. There was a 3-way tie for 2nd place between Nathaniel Ruddell, Zachary Whitfield, and Max Waldorf. Ryan and Gavin Galanski tied for third with Ryan getting the 5th place trophy on tie-breaks.
Full results are below. Click here for USCF results.
There's an image gallery below the results. Sorry I didn't get everyone. :( Thanks again for all the players and parents. Keep and eye out for tournaments starting next fall.
Please let me know if you have any questions about chess resources. I know not everybody was particularly happy with their results and I hope that motivates them a bit to putting more time and effort into their studies. Doing just a bit of chess study each week over the summer will do wonders for your game. Check out the Resources page if you need ideas.
